Performing battery life cycle tests

When using primary and secondary batteries, in addition to the general technical design, the fundamental question arises as to whether a particular battery is capable of meeting the requirements for durability.

Primary batteries should last for the entire life cycle of a product or, if necessary, replacement should only be necessary at a frequency that is reasonable for the customer.

Secondary batteries should meet durability expectations, in this case cyclic life.

Manufacturers of secondary battery cells specify the cyclic life under ideal conditions (fixed charge and discharge rate, room temperature) in their data sheets. Real-world applications usually deviate significantly from these conditions. In order to be able to make a statement about the cyclic life, it is common practice to carry out application-specific tests. In these tests, the battery is subjected to a load profile and climate profile that closely resembles real-world applications over a longer period of time using a climate chamber and a cell tester.

The results of such a cycling test can be used to determine whether the battery cell meets the requirements of your product or whether there is even an increased warranty risk.
